Neil Ferguson is a Artist, Lecturer and member of the Visual Arts Practice Group at Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design, Metropolitan University, London. Ferguson's research interests include: structuring personal "art systems" that employ rules and strategies to track small thoughts and imagining; exploring connections and experience in reflexive and reflective actions; promoting systems of thinking and making that highlight "internal detail" in situations and objects; using extensive series of images to display the versatility of image production; serializing projects to display the obsessive nature of capturing experiences through image; placing importance on "almost nothings" and "wee thoughts," as the moments of extreme clarity that sustain art practice and its theoretical development in the composition of art events, art projects and essayistic approaches to art production ; promotion of drawing and painting, not simply as skills, but as thinking tools. He has recently taken part in the "Systems-Art and Systems-Aesthetics Conference" at the Whitechapel Art Gallery Laboratory, London.

ISLES – Little Comets directed by Aoife McArdie at Agile. Andy West whose designed DVD covers and the logo for 1968 Film Group, also has a day job in the band Clock Opera. Below is the press release for the new single, the band will be touring this summer to promote the single. Clock Opera has been steadily building a reputation as purveyors of cerebral, original and utterly captivating music over the last year. Their first limited edition single ‘White Noise’ is now a rarity and the two released last year (‘A Piece Of String’ and ‘Once and For All’) were both lauded both across the blogosphere and in the heavyweight music press and broadsheets.  

Their new single ‘Belongings’ was released on 9th May. Produced by front man Guy Connelly and already a highlight of their live set, it’s an incredibly beautiful and emotive song. Calling to mind the likes of Steve Reich, pianos dapple Guy’s dulcet voice, building to a euphoric crescendo before opening out into a cinematic vista of big sound and glorious harmonies. The B side is the understated brooding and delicate ‘Let Go The Lifeboats’.

Filming has finished on the Neil Ferguson project, The film focused mainly on Ferguson’s work in the present, but does include ‘System Art’, the work he produced in 2004 for the Fondazione Baruchello, Rome and the on-going artwork ‘Now we are surrounded’. The film also shows Ferguson in his studio, being interviewed and making art in situ for this documentary. The film has been directed by Peter Bromley and will be edited by him. Ruben Woodin was on camera and Claude Bromley on sound.

Claude Chabrol has died aged 80.He was one of the first to leave Cahiers du Cinema and start out as an independent filmmaker with in the later so called ‘La Nouvelle Vague.’ He was un- credited on Godard’s first feature film À bout de souffle as Technical adviser, He made films mostly for the mainstream and in some ways could almost be seen as a French Hitchcock. Nearly if not all the films he made in the 60’s & 70’s are brilliant, including the small master film Le Boucher (The Butcher) just 85 mins long and with the amazing looking Stéphane Audran, his then wife.

DJ for 1968 Film Group Katharine McVeigh releases some music tracks on the Global Vortex label. Posted below is the edited press release and a link for the tracks.

“My son Joe played me Dizzee Rascal’s first album in 2004 and after 10 years of drum ‘n bass, it was the most interesting music I’d heard in ages. I immediately got obsessed with grime and early dubstep.”

So says Katharine, aka DJ BPM, a Carrickfergus native, who having “run away to London at 17” has been living there ever since, immersing herself first in drum ‘n bass and breakbeat as a club and pirate radio DJ, before following urban London into the dark heart of dubstep. This has resulted in ‘The Roarr’, a menacing quiet storm of minimal beats and Metalheadz blasts of noise which has been picked up by U.S. label Global Vortex, for the second volume of their epymonous compilations, getting a full release tomorrow. The connection between BPM and the label owner Myng was strengthened by her two years presenting a snow on his parallel internet radio station Global Vortex Radio.

Charles Hayward, for those who don’t know, is a veteran drummer and innovator of modern music. One of the founding members of experimental rock group, This Heat, he continues to work as a collaborator as well as a solo artist to this day…
With sounds ranging from free-jazz to more experimental electro-acoustic recordings filmmaker Peter Bromley has set out to convey the musicianship of Charles Hayward in his short documentary “Charles Hayward Recorded”
Blending exerts of rehearsals, live performance, interviews with fellow musicians and collaborators as well as one on one sound bites with the man himself, “Charles Hayward Recorded” is an intricate exploration. With improvisation a key ingredient to his sound, we learn of the differences to his music compared to the free play of jazz where “it happens and goes.” For Hayward, his music is about the creation of multiple sound worlds which in turn become a single piece or a song.
The free nature of Hayward’s music is to some degree reflected in the filmmaking, with the documentary not really holding any particular structure. As a result, the film really feels like a fairly simple joining of performance and interviews and as such as an audience member there is not a great pull towards the subject.

VULTURES VS AMPERSAND ALBUM

This CD, entitled Vultures vs. Ampersand, boasts ambient, dark, and industrial sounds that recall Italian Futurism in two half hour long tracks that highlight the unusual instrumentation and varied musical backgrounds of the two projects.
Ampersand, led by artist and musician Stephen Oldfield, builds and performs with giant metallic structures created in his Deptford home. Along with the sound sculptures, Ampersand uses missile shell casings, corrugated iron sheets, and a dismantled piano as well as radios, detuned electric bass, and enhanced electronics.
Vultures Quartet for this recording features prepared zither, a Korg synthesizer, metal percussion, bowed cymbals, and house hold objects such as pot lids, a wok, table legs, and a CD rack. Many of the acoustic sounds made by the quartet were manipulated and reintroduced into the composition through the live computer processing of member Matt Chilton.

In 2010 Peter Bromley will direct a documentary as part of the Somme Project. The film is based around the opening day of the Franco-British offensive on the Somme on the 1st July 1916. The idea is to walk the front-line as it was, immediately prior to the opening stages of the battle and record the walk in image and sound as it is now. A day of artists’ performances and installations at Market Estate Project, which will take place on 6 March from 2 pm to 10 pm. Market Estate is a historical site build in 1960-s, and a former Caledonian Cattle Market back in Victorian times. Market Estate Project is celebrating the transitional point in the history of the site – the building, which serves the setting for the project, will undergo deconstruction and will disappear as we know it today. On the 6th March you would be witnessing a communal artistic response to the space before its demolition.
‘A-Field’ is a project, developed by Analema Group in collaboration with LCI, which will take place at the Market Estate on 6 March at 8.00 pm.
‘A-Field' is an interactive immersive light and sound experience, taking place in the central courtyard of the Market Estate. It will run for 45 min and will incorporate live improvised sound in the setting of laser projection and ambient noise as biofeedback of artistic interaction with the moment.
The artist will ‘control’ the sounds and light, through the real time activity of her brain and heart. She will essentially “conduct” the visual and musical score, through an EEG/ECG devices. It will provide a counterpoint to the sounds produced on site live by the musicians.
Analema Group is an art group of artists, researches, programmers, sound engineers. It acts as a single artist, on the principle of synergy, aiming to produce a site-specific phenomenal sonic and visual spatial experience. For this project Analema Group collaborates with LCI and a number of musicians to carry out live immersive experience.

Charles Hayward has performed and recorded innovative work for over thirty years and remains an icon of modern music. Beyond his awe-inspiring ability as a drummer lies broader artistic expression which combines a fascination with songwriting, sonic composition akin to painting and the 'synesthesia' of sound and image.
Hayward has always been artistically ambitious. In the late 70's his trio This Heat hit the 'New Wave' with a genuine alternative. He recalls long and intense discussion between group members at rehearsals, mental 'limbering up' that was embodied in the challenging aesthetic and political sensibility of their recordings and performance. This Heat was at the avant-garde of the punk explosion and their cerebral and visceral impact still sound unique and unforgettable.
Charles Hayward continues to mesmerise audiences to this day. Working as a solo artist, his speed, dexterity, timing and sheer athleticism with a drum kit overflows into the poetry of his performance and song. When he collaborates his playing becomes an equal constituent in a collective exploration of musical expression and communication. It began with free-jazz but continues to evolve. It’s little surprise that John Coltrane is a major influence. For Charles Hayward, live, ‘controlled’ improvisation continues to inspire him and sits comfortably alongside his other solo and collaborative endeavours.

Four Corners - Launch date set 09.09.09 Venue TBC.
Sophie Tom has been making journeys difficult for the last fifteen years.
She started in 1994 with an overland expedition from Hull, England to Kathmandu, Nepal, taking six weeks in a 20-year-old Landrover.
This was the beginning of such exigent art making.
The images in the book though taken from different journeys (see below) are themselves part process, part performance. The voyage itself responds to a specific set of rules in order for Tom to arrive.
1994-1995 - Hull, England to Kathmandu, Nepal. Six weeks overland through France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and India.
1998-1999 – San Francisco, USA to Ushuaia, Chile A voyage of twelve months duration by public transport, foot and sail boat, (Panama to Columbia in a 42 ft sloop) from North to South America. (With a 12 month allowance of £1,800)
2004-2005 – From Auckland to Auckland, New Zealand A 4,500 mile circumnavigation of New Zealand’s Coastline in 4 months by bicycle.
The images are not in the order of the journeys. Each offers a perspective, and has its own story.

THE SOMME FILM

In 2010 Peter Bromley will direct a documentary as part of the Somme Project. Stephen Oldfield and Adrian Jackson will work closely on the film also. 1968 Film Group is producing the project.

The film is based around the opening day of the Franco-British offensive on the Somme on the 1st July 1916. The idea is to walk the front-line as it was, immediately prior to the opening stages of the battle and record the walk in image and sound as it is now; continuing Bromley’s ongoing interest in the ‘missing men’ within the landscape of the Somme. Beginning with the British Third Army’s diversionary attack at Gommecourt, moving southwards to the Fourth Army’s attack at Serre, Beaumont-Hamel, Thiepval, la Boisselle, Montauban, Fricourt and Mametz. In addition to the French Sixth Army’s attack towards Maurepas. The film will try to reflect losses on all sides….the walk itself will set out the narrative.

Sophie Tomlinson is to publish a book of photographs with 1968 Film Group in early September 2009. The photographs reflect Sophie’s on-going interests with people and places. The work featured in the book is taken from trips across Iran, India, Pakistan, New Zealand and San Francisco to Ushaia (chile-the most Southern town in the world) South America.. also including some parts of Europe. Monday 9th February 2009
On traversing the battlefield in October 2008, we walked for a second time down ‘Death Valley’, immediately adjacent to Mametz Wood. On walking the length of the valley we finally emerged on to the D.20, where we were able to look back over the valley from the vantage point of the Bazentin Ridge.
Now in 2009, from Longueval, we set a course to walk the length of the D.20, taking us to our last reference point of October 2008; between Bazentin -le-Petit and Bazentin-le-Grand. Our walk from Longueval to the two Bazentin Woods will echo the course of the Battle of Bazentin Ridge nearly ninety three years earlier.
On course we pass a new memorial, dedicated in July 2002, to the ‘pipers’ of the Great War. In the context of the fighting that took place in Longueval and Delville Wood, it focus’ immediate reference to the 9th (Scottish) Division, who would take part in the battle here in July 1916.
The Battle of Bazentin Ridge, July 1916
14th July at 03:20 1916: A five minute artillery bombardment is unleashed against the German line followed five minutes later, at 03:35, by the first wave of British infantry of the 21stand 7th Divisions advancing towards Bazentin- le-Petit Wood and the village of the same name, an advance from the northern edge of Mametz Wood. Facing them were the ‘Flatiron’, ‘Villa’ and ‘Circus’ trenches.
Following this attack, the villages of Bazentin -le-Petit, Longueval and Trones Wood are captured.
14th July, two battalions of cavalry, the 20th Deccan Horse and the 7th Dragoon Guards from the Secunderbrand Brigade, 2nd Indian Cavalry Division; attack High wood. This is the first and last time that a cavalry charge takes place on the Western Front. The attack, a heroic but inevitably hopeless anachronism from a previous century fails to take the wood which finally falls into British hands on the 15th September.
On the 15th July fighting begins in Delville Wood a name that would become synonymous with the South African Brigade.
As we leave Longueval, we progress along the D.20. Snow is still on the ground and the sky ahead of us has taken on a milky, foggy light, an off white tone that is due to the cloud cover preventing a clearer and colder light breaking through. Our expectation of witnessing the ‘full’ moon later that night is diminished because of it.

Lazare is working on a photographic project based on the City Rome, where he is now resident, after spending fifteen years in Marseille. Jean-Pierre Lazare was in the early collective with Alice Eiffel and Peter Bromley, originally based in Marseille and Lyon. Benjamin Hooper who provided the Pro Tools production work for the Ampersand/Vertov film project also plays drums and percussion with his own band 23frames.
23frames will release their long waited album ‘the mystery calculator’ through Polling Station Productions. Nearly 2 years in the making, the album was mastered by top record producer Jon Astley.
Astley’s producing credits stretch from The Who and Led Zeppelin to Tori Amos. After the sessions, Astley is quoted as saying “one of the best new bands coming through here.”
The album’s launch will be sometime in October, but from August is available to order from the Polling Station website. Gigs are being played across London to coincide with the album’s release. More info from www.PollingStationProductions.co.uk and www.23frames.com

Stephen Oldfield, The Somme.Net Sound Recordist and founder member of Ampersand, has been working on a new soundtrack to Vertov’s film Enthusiasm. The Somme.net is a ten-year photographic project involving Peter Bromley, Adrian Jackson and Stephen Oldfield. Started in 2006, the project will end with the centenary of the Battle of the Somme in 2016.
The Somme project will revisit the frontline of the Battle of the Somme, the places where thousands fell, and capture the landscape as it appears now in photographs. The project has been undertaken in a spirit of exploration. A new website will be launched in early July special dedicated to the project, more info soon.

Peter Bromley is to direct a short film on the work of artist Joseph Beuys. Beuys was known for his ability to inspire people from all backgrounds, not just artists. He is most famous for his ritualistic performances and his energetic championing of 'every man is a artist'. Beuys also made many video based works, which are as important as the drawings and large-scale sculpture for which he is better known. Filming will take place in and around Beuys birth town Krefeld, Germany. The crew will have access to some of the original rooms that Beuys himself constructed and installed at the Krefeld Museum. He started his career in the epoch-making band This Heat - which, as a kind of post-punk outsider, set new standards with its brash, complex sounds and incisive, socio-critical lyrics - before moving on to a solo career, producing a row of superb albums. In his close-up portrait 'Charles Hayward: Recorded', Peter Bromley shows the dedication and passion, with which Hayward approaches his music and craft. The screening of the film, which will be its world premiere, will be followed by a solo concert by the protagonist. A concert with Hayward is a unique opportunity to experience him anchored behind his drum kit, singing his songs against a base of real and electronic sounds. The event will take place at the Andersen_s Contemporary gallery, which is currently hosting an exhibition of the Danish sound artist, instrument maker and music historian Gæoudjiparl/Goodiepal. "The inaugral 'Tate Shorts' organised in conjunction with 1968 Film Group and Tate Modern took place on Wednesday 7th November in the Starr Auditorium at Tate Modern. 1968 Film Group presented, to great acclaim, the Peter Bromley produced film 'Rendition' written and directed by James O'Brien.
The evening was the culmination of a 1968 Film Group initiative of involving Tate Modern in the showing of emerging independent film-makers to a larger audience in the context of a gallery environment advancing 1968 Film Group's stated aim of liberating independent film-making from the shackles of conventional exhibition and distribution strangleholds and was progressed with energy and commitment by Sandra MacLean, Tate Modern.
The diverse programme welcomed animation, art shorts, monologues, found footage, travel footage and a diverse political content that was exemplified by Kieron Miller's "Have Faith Children…" a radical existential debut from animation's new grand master in association with 1968 Film Group.
Sue Hayes, from the London Film Commission, was our guest of honour and 1968 Film Group hope to extend this emerging dialogue in relation to future productions. It was felt that the film of the event, with its hard-hitting subject matter and startling photography, offering a corruscating critique of the UK government’s complicity in the rendition process, was 'Rendition'. The performances of Terry Muldoon, Daniel O'Brien, Kal Sabir and Mark Lynch in many ways redefined political performance in its honesty, truth and integrity, an engagement of restraint and power, not to be missed.
1968 Film Group are now organizing a short retrospective of its work over the last seven years, with a new production by James O’Brien to be held at the Roxy Bar and Screen early in 2008, programme details will be announced in March."

Susan C Triesman directs a Shakespeare for our time – for the culture of laptops and mobiles – set in the high finance world of private equity companies in the City, with the audience in the midst of the office night out. Arragon Inc and Messina Inc have just concluded a major global takeover as the play begins.

The keynote of the play is always still the dance of love, betrayal, suspicion, deceit and discovery played out through wit in this most enduring of Shakespeare’s romantic comedies – which has its extreme dark side, with the difficult resonance of the way women are treated in a world where family honour comes first. Peter Bromley’s feature length documentary on Charles Hayward, avant-garde drummer and experimental percussionist will be released late autumn 2007. Hayward hit the experimental rock scene of the 1970’s with the band This Heat. Since then he has remained at the forefront of innovative music, which extends the musical experience. This film attempts to give us an insight into Hayward’s music, his inspiration and his creative drive. Bromley spent 18 months filming this comprehensive exploration of the Hayward world of music. Hayward performs as a solo artist and with musicians with whom he has collaborated through the years, some over a period of two decades. Bromley has collected footage from live gigs and other impromptu sessions. Hayward shares his thoughts on music and much more during intimate interviews. Musicians who play regularly with Hayward discuss the musical journey they embarked on when they began to play with Hayward. All these musicians abandon themselves to experiment and achieve musical constructions only possible where boundaries fall away. Openness, energy, excitement, passion, freedom to explore are the hallmarks of the music produced during the filming of this documentary. Bromley captures the total involvement of these artists with their music and demonstrates the centrality of Hayward’s genius to the musical edifice that this sensitive film examines.

“…no ticket…no address…no papers…an offence you can be arrested for? Take him in…we’ve got a few questions”.

The urban mundane, the revenue inspector stops a passenger without a ticket, the descent begins. A suspect wakes up in a blacked out dungeon, alone except for the living hell about to be unleashed.

A dislocated individual brought to a place, unrepresented and alone, will he confess to the crimes of others or are these the crimes of us all which allow the torture of an individual to make a mockery of the law.

A disturbing collage of abstract imagery distilled through a jump-cut, quick-fire sequential edit, “Rendition” grafts a stylised linguistic form to a street-hot, urban mythology, creating an image based language, of sound and ideas revealed as a vast distorting mirror of ambiguity.
